WALTON FAMILY FOUNDATION RECOGNIZES NJ’S PARENTS ENGAGING PARENTS as a COMMUNITY CHANGE AGENT
The Walton Family Foundation has recognized Parents Engaging Parents-NJ (PEPNJ) as a Change Agent in its Community Change Case Studies Series. The latest set of three organizations to be highlighted as one of the organizations “transforming lives in their communities, one good idea at a time.”
PEPNJ is highlighted for its work that encourages local families to be intentional and collaborative to support positive change for children and communities. Altorice Frazier, Executive Director, understood the importance of elevating the conversation between parents and schools, making it less transactional and more authentic. This approach empowered parents to build true partnerships with the education system. Frazier states, “We want to avoid check-the-box initiatives,” adding, “we want to come into things with intention and with a coalition, collaboration, and community.”
In the past three years, PEPNJ has built what it calls a “Beloved Community,” a group of parents, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders committed to making things better in the places they live. This approach has allowed PEPNJ to “cascade leadership,” recognizing the community’s ability to nurture leaders who uniquely understand the issues and can develop viable solutions based on their assets and strengths. About the Walton Family Foundation
The Walton Family Foundation is, at its core, a family-led foundation. Three generations of the descendants of our founders, Sam and Helen Walton, and their spouses, work together to lead the foundation and create access to opportunity for people and communities. We believe the best ideas can come from anywhere, so we stay open to new thinking from all over. And we partner with those who are closest to the problem because they’re usually closest to the solution.
We work in three areas: improving K-12 education, protecting rivers and oceans and the communities they support, and investing in our home region of Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta.
